Don Braithwaite's Cyber Home

You will not find the answers to any of those big universal questions like the meaning of life or where the missing socks go. This site contains answers to the easy questions that I know about myself. This will be boring to most of you.

Me in VermontScattered throughout this web site you can expect to find some photographs of family, friends, and me. (Click on any of the thumbnail images to enlarge the photo, and once enlarged, click and drag the grey bar to move the photo.) In addition, you will also find some things that I like to do to pass the time, and miscellaneous nonsense that really does not mean much to anyone else.

It is somewhat ironic, but since I started creating web sites for a living, I have decided that they are somewhat pointless except maybe as a marketing tool for large companies, and as big personal ads for individuals. Web sites will not bring about world peace.

Why did you make these pages like this?

Yes, there is method to this madness. I am constantly striving to simplify my web site. It is always hard to strike a balance between content and composition. It is often too easy to fill up a bunch of pages with every new, cool HTML tag or Java script that comes along, but in the end have you really said anything on your page that isn't on a million other pages around the world. Content is King.

Have you ever looked at your own web site on a machine that is running a different operating system than the one that you used to create it? Because I work for clients who demand that their sites look good on all systems, I have gotten into the habit of making sure that my own web sites look as good as possible on most other operating systems. However, you cannot always get it right. It is also amazing to see how different your graphics look on a different resolution monitor, and on a different operating system.

One of my favourite sites is jeffglover.com. Jeffrey has a section called "Sucky to Savvy" where he talks about various aspects of web design. We all tend to add a lot of "sucky" stuff to our web sites because we think that others will think that it is cool. Nevertheless, they are not very cool after you see the same Java applet or 'under construction' image ten to twenty bazillion times. This says nothing about who the person really is, other than the fact that they know how to copy stuff.

I will be the first to admit that my site does not really add any critical information to the world in general. However, I do think that it says something about who I am. I do like to experiment with the latest in web design and development, and I try to create something that is somewhat pleasant to look at.

Unless things change drastically, you will probably never find a guest book or any type of blog on this web site. I am not into it. I had the guest book for a while, but it did not really amount to much. A bit of an ego boost when people would post nice comments, but other than that I just did not see the need. As for blogging - I do not get it. It has taken me almost 8 years to change the design of this web site so I cannot imagine updating a journal every day.

You can always email me at me@don.braithwaite.name if you need to know what I did today.
